Easter, ANZAC, Curry & Flights

Happy belated easter everybody!

Had a pretty relaxing easter weekend, culminating in the first “Sci-Pie” event at 52 Broomfield St. Ben, Andy C, Arthur and I watched sci-fi movies (Three of the Star Trek movies, Back to the Future, The Matrix and Flash Gordon) and baked a couple of pies again. This time it was the classic “Full English Breakfast Pie” to start with, followed by a new (and absolutely brilliant) “Kangaroo Mince Lasagne Pie”. There’s various pics from the event here.

Spent the last few weeks working reasonably hard in the lab. We’ve just started trying to get my first proper paper written and submitted for publication so watch this space for more info! I also tried to get a copy of the other paper I mentioned before, but it hasn’t been published yet. Unfortunately the journal it’s in also only comes out once every 6 months so I think it will be quite a while until it does come out. Been doing more tutoring as well which is good because the money is needed. Also just got myself a proper debit card on my bank account & a credit card. Hoorah.

About a week ago Ellen also had us all round to her new place for a housewarming / birthday celebration too. Great fun – she made a whole batch of pizza dough and we made our own pizzas & played N64. Pictures to be found here.

This weekend was ANZAC day (kind of like rememberance day back in the UK, although they also have that here too). Lots of world war one stories on TV and things. Tim & Jami organised a barbeque at one of the many public barbeques spattered across the city – this one was in the Roma Street Parklands. Was great fun. Had lots of good food (once the sprinkler system turned off & stopped spraying our sausages while they were cooking….) and played frisbee. Unfortunately the sun was extraordinarily hot for the time of year and I got pretty badly burnt on my neck & head – lovely picture of it on facebook if you want to see it, you can see where my sunglasses were. There’s a few pictures of the BBQ here & a panoramic picture here. Tonight I also cooked a big beef madras for us in the house & had Ben, Tilly & Andy round to help eat it which was really good fun. Ben cooked us some poppadoms and Andy brought some ANZAC biscuits for pudding.

Finally, I seem to have spent a lot of time over the last 3 weeks booking flights. I have booked flights to Sydney (along with accommodation) & Cairns for when Mum & Alexandra are here (soon). But even more excitingly I have booked tickets to come home at Christmas! I have 4 weeks from about the 18th December to the 15th January! Hoorah! I am really excited about it already even though it’s still a good 8 months away.

Anyway, I think that’s all the major goings on recently. Will update again when some more interesting things happen. Mum & Small will be here in 3 weeks so that will be good too.
